It is thought that the artist creates "works of art". But what truely is a great work of art? What is the content or subject matter of a painting considered to be a "great work of art:? Is a "beautiful" painting of a woman considered a "great" work of art? Or can the subject matter be a little more, shall we say, "controversial"? Is a painting of a horrific "tradgedy" such as war greater than that of a "beautiful nude" ? I think that "Art" means different things to different people. Different personalities. Different mind-sets. It is therefore impossible to define what is "great" in terms of art. Art, as we know, is "subjective". As "beauty" is, subjective. And as such, "great art" is subjective. It is in the mind of every individual who looks at art to determine what that particular "piece" of art means to them.
